Better Than That

Have You Got a Minute?
A very dear friend from Weatherford found an old newsletter I wrote back in 2017 and sent it to me. I’d like to share it with you because I believe it’s just as needed today as it was seven years ago.
This is a memory from when Larry and I were married. We were driving somewhere, and for some reason I said something critical and harsh about someone. I will never forget how Larry responded. He placed his hand on my arm and lovingly said, “You are better than that.”
Instantly I experienced the “kindness that leads to repentance,” (Romans 2:4). His graciousness TOWARDS me produced grace IN me, and I asked forgiveness for my wrong attitude.
What kept me from being defensive and angry? I truly believe it was because Larry lovingly reminded me of my identity in Christ. He made me aware that I was not acting in a manner worthy of the gospel, but he did it without shaming me or attacking me. I believe he lovingly corrected me because Larry understood that relationship is more important than being right.
In our relationships do we accuse or do we ask? Do we attack or do we accept? Do we assume to know what is in someone’s heart or do we allow God to deal with them? Ephesians 4:32 gives us such great instruction, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. This is gospel-centered relationship; let’s determine to live it!
Thank you for giving me a minute.
